So, I’ve been thinking. I’ve always been an anime/manga fan, ever since I picked up my first copy of Case Closed from the library, otherwise known as Detective Conan. I loved the intricate plots, the lovable characters, and the concepts that made me think—why didn’t I come up with this first? Admittedly, I stopped reading and watching for a long time, but recently I’ve been loving the relatively new anime, SPY X FAMILY. I just have to say, it’s been so fun to return to one of my first loves in fiction. So, what is SPY X FAMILY about? I won’t spoil anything, but hopefully I’ll convince you to at least watch the first episode.
What is SPY X FAMILY About?
We can’t talk about the anime without talking about its name. Why spy? Why family? The spy at the heart of the story is Loid Forger, otherwise known by his agent name Twilight. Can we just take a second to admire not just his cool name, but his effortless handsomeness? So, agent Twilight has done it all, and he’s always succeeded at his missions. He aims to keep the balance between the East and West—Ostania and Westalis. And the latest mission involves spying on a particular leader in Ostania named Donovan Desmond.
That’s where the family part comes in. He must start a family and enroll his child into a prestigious school, gaining a connection to Donovan’s son. To do so, he adopts Anya, a young telepath who is simply a joy. And then, he marries Yor Briar, who happens to be an assassin. Now, you might think that Twilight would find out about his family, but what’s amazing is that he thinks that both Yor and Anya are fine, if not a little bit quirky. Anya knows both of her parents’ identities thanks to telepathy, but Yor doesn’t know a thing about Loid’s real identity, just that he’s very handsome and hardworking.
The concept is a strong one, and before watching I prepared myself for deadly missions with Twilight, along with Yor totally “killing it” in her role as an assassin. Now yes, the anime does have these kinds of thrilling moments. But what surprised me is the “family” part of the anime. Without spoiling too much, Anya, Loid, and Yor develop quite the bond. They learn to overcome the difficulties of suddenly being part of a family. Better yet, Anya is a joy. Her facial expressions are to die for, especially smug-Anya. There were many times when I smiled or laughed just simply from a still shot of Anya’s face.
More on the Charm of SPY X FAMILY
So, Anya is probably the main star here. What’s not to love about her pink hair, her weirdness, and her telepathy? But we also have Loid Forger aka Twilight, who is not only very handsome, but actually a caring person who many times will compromise his mission to make sure Yor and Anya are safe and happy. We love a caring spy and father! May I say, he gets more and more handsome as the episodes go on.
And Yor Forger—she is a trained assassin, sure, but she’s incredibly clumsy and a horrible cook. May I say, she almost kills her family with the food that she makes! Now, that’s some talent that she has. Sure, she’s not talented at being a wife or mother at first, but her earnestness makes me want to jump in and tell her she’s doing an amazing job raising Anya!
SPY X FAMILY has two seasons so far, with a third one on the way! It’s a perfect time to jump in and experience the missions, the family dynamics, and the hilarious moments that come with such a unique and strange family. Let me know who your favorite character is! Is it Anya? Or perhaps you have fallen for Twilight or Yor. Just a little spoiler—there may be a very special dog that joins the family too!
Thank you for reading this post—what is SPY X FAMILY about?—and catch me on the next one on my blog. I’ll dive into a new fiction work, trust me! And always remember: pink hair don’t care.
