Hi fiction lover! I’m finally tackling my fear, reviewing a fanfiction. Previously, I reviewed the first chapters of The Star Seekers and 7FATES: CHAKHO, which are both official stories in collaboration with HYBE and Wattpad. This time, I’m delving into a Jungkook fanfiction titled in time by ksjshw on Wattpad.
Are you ready for the premise?
“miss second place is clearly second place when it comes to realizing that her childhood ‘rival’ has been in love with her this entire time.”
Oh! I love that it hints at both childhood friends (possibly?) and enemies to lovers. I question what sort of competition that Jungkook and our main character are in, and whether it’s a true rivalry. The quotes around “rival” suggest that there are many meanings to this word.
Since this work has a prologue, I’ll also review that! We begin in 4th grade, with the main character Park Miyoung. Jungkook challenges Miyoung to a race. Apparently, no one’s ever beaten her before. But Jungkook sure does, calling her “Miss Second Place” afterwards. I love the attitude between the two characters already. Miyoung’s reputation of being unbeatable, broken by the confident Jungkook, leads her to yell a promise that she’ll beat him the next time.
The author makes a note that this fanfic is inspired by the anime Special A. We love the crossover! In chapter one, we jump all the way to 12th grade. Nayoung, Miyoung’s best friend, meets Miyoung and comments about how they’re already seniors. In Anatomy class, they run into none other than Kim Taehyung!
It’s a welcome surprise to run into another BTS member, and I also appreciate the dreamy GIF that the author included. Apparently, Miyoung has a crush on Taehyung. She says, to my utter agreement: “You could tell that God spent a lot more work making this man.”
Enter Jungkook. He’s the best friend of Taehyung, and Miyoung’s not very thrilled that they’re in the same homeroom. Jungkook beats her at everything, and I quote, “Studies, sports, even taking the last ice cream bar at the ice cream place.”
Jungkook calls her “Miss Second Place” yet again, and Miyoung actually growls. Jungkook taunts her, and then she lunges at him. She grabs his collar and pulls him close (is it just me, or are you breathing hard too?). She pushes him away after swearing to knock him off his “stupid high horse.”
Wow! What an opening. I definitely see why this fanfic captured the attention of so many readers on Wattpad. I am all for stories inspired by anime, and the author seems to make it their own.
Miyoung has a feisty edge to her. I love her spirit and her competitive nature. The history between her and Jungkook makes me want to look back on everything that Jungkook beat her on so far. Has she ever come close to being first place again? How often do they challenge each other?
With the introduction of Taehyung, I’m confident that the other members will also make an appearance. It would be super cool if they were also in the school rankings in some way.
It looks like I was wrong about the friendship part, but I’m excited to see Jungkook and Miyoung realize their feelings for each other. Will they confess in a heated moment, like the one in the first chapter? I wonder how Miyoung will react when finding out that her “rival” is in love with her.
